“Julianne Guitar” Raffle for Breast Cancer
I got a call Saturday evening with upsetting news. My aunt (who is also my Godmother) was diagnosed with breast cancer. Julianne is a 50-year-old mother of two (Erin, who is in college, and Sean, who is in the U.S. Coast Guard). She is married to Tim who flew T-38s in the Air Force. As my dad’s youngest sister, Julianne has seemed almost like a cousin to me aunt than and aunt because she has always seemed a lot younger than her age. Needless to say, it is sitting really heavy with me. Julianne is eternally optimistic and is the type of person that will tell everyone that she is fine and not to worry about her. This is not Julianne’s first medical challenge. She was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis (MS) about 18 years ago and has learned to live with fatigue as well as numbness in her legs and feet. She of course acts like it’s no big deal. Just something she has to deal with. Now she is facing a mastectomy and chemotherapy to combat cancer. I have seen the challenge of fighting breast cancer having watched a good friend lose his wife to the disease several years ago. I hope that we can make some sort of difference for her and for others fighting breast cancer by raising money for the cause. The guitar that will be up for auction is one that I built as part of my Ready to Ship (RTS) program. I stained the quilted top pink on the suggestion of my wife. I had no idea the significance that it might have later on. There is an incredible irony in the story. I wrote an email to a representative at www.breastcancer.org to offer the guitar to be put up for auction to raise money for breast cancer. Less than a week later, I learned of my aunt’s diagnosis. I had a weird feeling when I contacted the breast cancer organization. I am not sure why I felt compelled to contact them, it just seemed to make sense and an excellent use of this guitar. I did have a twinge of a feeling that I really hoped no one whom I loved would ever be affected by this disease. I am one usually suspect of those who say they have premonitions, and surely this was just a coincidence, but the purpose of that guitar is now crystal clear. When I talked to Julianne about it she simply said, “It’s a God thing.” ![]() The terms of this raffle will be similar to the previous charitable auctions/raffles we have done. Last year we auctioned off a guitar for the benefit of Bill Chapin, an Oregon guitar builder whose shop burned down and also the Suckerpunch raffle where we raised money for my employee Mitchell Conner who was assaulted in a parking lot over a parking space, breaking his jaw in two places and requiring him to undergo multiple surgeries and have his jaw wired shut for nearly 4 months. We were amazed at the generosity of the guitar community who donated thousands of dollars for these worthy causes. Our goal with the “Julianne Guitar” Raffle is to raise $10,000 for breast cancer survivors. I asked Julianne what she would want to see done with the money and this was her answer, “My immediate thought is to help other women who are not fortunate enough to have insurance.” She did not ask for money to help pay for surgeries or medical expenses. Her immediate thought was to give to someone else that is less fortunate. That is just who Julianne is. We are currently researching organizations that will put the money to its highest and most beneficial use. We are hoping that this will also raise awareness of the disease so that women will continue to receive annual exams for the early detection of breast cancer. The guitar is a 100% handmade Schroeder Custom guitar with a one piece quilted maple top, Honduran mahogany back, flamed maple neck and Brazilian rosewood fingerboard and headplate. The fingerboard and headplate have maple purfling. The scale is 24.75”. The pickups are handwound by Bryan Gunsher of Alta, California who owns the first Schroeder custom guitar to go to the public. ![]() Each donation of $50 will render a raffle ticket and we are aiming for the disbursement of 200 tickets, after which the raffle will take place and the guitar will be shipped to the recipient. Please help by contacting Schroeder Guitars or send donations to: Mailing Address: “Julianne Guitar” Raffle Schroeder Guitars 2561 Radio Lane Redding, CA 96001 You may also send a Paypal payment to: jzsguitars@charter.net ![]()

Wow Jason, your inlay department is getting VERY good! I love the natural shorty, but I'm intrigued by the tone of this pink one. Short scale guts with some brightness via a maple neck.... I'd wager that's my kind of thing. Maybe Claire needs a new guitar..... she doesn't play, never has....but still.....

Damn, Elizabeth is getting really good at inlay. Great job. I'm willing to bet the color scheme was Mitchell's idea wasn't it.

Here is a pic of the updated pickguard. I cut a ribbon into the pickguard to better symbolize the cause.

Jason you are very generous...I lost my dad to cancer a month after my 16th Bday and I still find it hard to think about or talk about for more than a brief moment...I sent a donation....count me in for the raffle...These days everyone has a story about Cancer so I'm sure it won't be hard to reach your goal
On a happier note, I do hope that I win the raffle....maybe pink is my color...don't know until you try right ? ![]()
