I thought this picture might "speak a thousand words" with regard to heartwood and sapwood of the rosewood tree and wood in general. Here is a picture of an Indian rosewood log with the heartwood (dark wood in the center) and the sapwood (lighter colored wood on the outside). The heartwood is generally harder and gives the tree structure. Heartwood is inactive meaning it does not convey moisture from roots to leaves, is formed by a gradual change in the sapwood. Sapwood, which contains both living and dead tissues, is the light-colored wood beneath the bark; it carries sap from roots to leaves.
