Top carve... Still needs a little refining in the horns but it is basically ready for back cavity and controls, then final sanding. Really like the topographical grainlines on this top. Really beautiful. This is the time to appreciate them too because there are almost invisible after stain and finish.

NOW you tell me! And you leave me to happily pick all the quartersawn ones! Hahahaha...

Anyways I personally like the vertical lines of a qtrsawn... especially if it's flamed. Heh.

Wait... Jason, that piece looks almost spalted due to the grain. Is Spalted maple a different breed? or is it a cut?

Spalted maple is a result of an invasive fungus that leaves ink-like veins in the wood.

Thanks Stu! Pretty stoked about this. Jason has pretty much gone out of his way to make me a happy camper.... that cool "Soul-patch-guy" that he is! ;)

That's awesome. Your guitar body really is incredible to me. That top is off the charts, I see a nice thick back, and I love the Shorty design. Damn, I love it. What are you doing for the neck?

Thanks Shad. Shoot, IMO, your guitar is one that sets the bar pretty high.

Thanks! Luckily for all of us, Jason sets his own bar pretty high, and we are fortunate enough to reap the benefits :)

What color are you thinking?

It's waaaaay coooool!

I'm confused??? Do you have 2 in the works or did you change tops? I could have swore I saw a progress pic of your top and it was different???

Lance's original body had Spalted maple. I had issues with tearout on the top edge of the top. It was my first spalted maple top and even after stabilizing with CNA glue it still gave me major trouble. I spoke to Lance and we decided to re-make the body. This is his replacement. Just one of those things. Bummed me out so bad. Lance was super cool about the issue as he knows about Spalted and the difficulties it can cause. The spalted body is viable but as a flattop. Haven't decided the fate of that guitar yet.

Really excited about this one though to complete Lance's order.

Cool, so those would be mineral streaks? or Fungus streaks?

They're technically Zone Lines (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spalting)

Oh I see. Thanks for explaining Jason.

I love how the top goes from super quilty to almost a plain top with a beautiful flowing grain. At least that's how it looks to me. Maybe Jason is posting two different tops. J/K.

I'll be keeping my eye on this thread. Keep the progress pics coming Jason.
